Guide to the Types and Styles of the Ukulele

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

The ukulele is a very small guitar that originated from an island in Portugal called Madeira. This instrument was called "braguinha" in Portuguese. In 1879, travelers took a ship from the island of Madeira to Hawaii. Craftsmen who witnessed this instrument being played were fascinated and began producing it for Hawaiians. The instrument was nicknamed "ukulele," which actually means, "jumping flea." It is also called "uke" for short.

Guide to the Types and Styles of the Ukulele

Ukes are different from guitars in several ways. They are usually very lightweight and easy to carry. Original style ukes are easier to learn to play because they have fewer strings. They are also easier on the fingers. Ukes are, however, limited in the range of notes that can be played. They are great for musicians who want simplicity!

Today this instrument is still very popular in Hawaii and is being shipped to music lovers around the world. Let's take a look at the types and styles of ukuleles.

Four Types of Ukuleles

There are four standard types of ukuleles, which are concert, soprano, tenor, and baritone. The most commonly used type is the soprano ukulele. Each type, except the baritone, is tuned using the well-known tune/phrase "my dog has fleas!" This involves hitting the keys G, C, E and then A. The tenor type is one octave down from soprano. The baritone's tuning is accomplished using this order of keys: E, B, G, D.

There are also hybrid ukuleles being produced today, such as the banjulele (banjo body), taropatch (eight-stringed instrument) and ukelin. These specialty instruments are usually developed by individuals or specialty musical instrument companies. Some are even highly collectible today.

The soprano uke is the smallest at about 21 inches long. The concert uke is about 23 inches long. The baritone uke is 30 inches long, and the tenor uke is 26 inches long. The baritone and tenor ukes are more similar to regular-sized guitars, only with just four strings.

Styles of Ukuleles

Ukuleles may also come in a variety of styles, colors, and shapes to reflect the personality of the musician. Some examples of style variety are the Bushman ukuleles, which come in styles such as Jenny Soprano, Jenny Pineapple, Jenny Concert, Jenny Tenor, and Jenny Baritone.

A ukulele maker might use a variety of high-quality woods to produce the instruments such as Mahogany to give the instrument a brilliant finish. The shapes of the instrument may vary as well. Some resemble the regular guitar shape while others might be completely oval-shaped, similar to a pineapple shape, or have a piece "cut away" at the neck.

With prices ranging from 9 and up, anyone can own a ukulele. They can be ordered online for music fans that live in areas where the ukulele is not readily available locally. There is also a wide variety of ukulele strings and accessories such as felt picks, tuners, amplifiers, shoulder straps, strap buttons, tuning machines, ukulele humidifiers, and more. Whether one wants a cheap ukulele to keep around the house for fun or an expensive one for professional concerts, it's easy to find just the right style online.

Your Cool Funk Guitar Guides

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

During the 1960's African-American musicians decided to get adventurous by blending Soul, jazz, R&B with danceable melodies. What they come up with is a musical revolution that became synonymous to the 1970's and late 60's: The Funk. The typical instruments of funk are electric guitar and bass, Hammond organ, drums, and saxophones. Funk has great sweeping bass lines and unforgettable guitar licks. Wild Cherry's "Play that Funky Music" has a very catchy guitar intro which so recognizable until now. Get ready for some funky beats!

Your Cool Funk Guitar Guides

It all starts with your technique
Always remember that when it comes to funky music, rhythm is very important. An eight to sixteen beat pattern is a staple in funk music, so better get your hands ready! To create a percussive sound, practice how to deaden strings using your fretting hand. Funk music generally uses simple patterns unlike rock or blues so this will be a cake walk to you. There's a very rare chance that you will do a lead part especially if your band has a horn section. If such is the case, be on the sideline. You may want to practice "clanging" by listening to Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie". Do not forget to use your wah pedals. Unlike rock or blues, wah pedals will keep your feet rocking when playing funk.

The Funky Scales
Most funk guitar players rely on the upper strings and not the higher pitched lower strings. While Blues players have their own scale, funk musicians usually play the Major Chord, 9th and 7th patterns. Even with their own chord progressions, funk guitarists often leave the notes "dead" all throughout the song.

Choose your weapon
As for effects, choose an overdrive, fuzz and wah. For guitars, a Telecaster or Stratocaster is an ideal choice. You can also customize a cheap guitar. The important thing to remember is to put a nice pickup near the bridge with a single coil for that instant "twang" needed to play funk.

You can never be wrong listening to the masters
To get into the groove, you need to learn from the masters of the music. James Brown's "Sex Machine" is a great primer in learning how to play rhythms without stepping someone else's musical toe. The Meter's "Just Kissed my Baby" has loads of reference about standard note patterns you need for funk music.

Discipline is a key when learning how to play funk. Just when you think you need to show off, then it's better to check yourself first. While funk songs may have a very "frantic" appeal, it is a very well-organized kind of music where everybody's roles are well-defined.

What You Need to Make Your Own Beats

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

So, you've been listening to hip hop and rap and watching BET and MTV and you realize that none of what those clowns are doing seems like it's very hard. I have to agree with you there. It's not hard if you learn how to do it, but you're not going to be able to make your own beats until you learn how to do it.

What You Need to Make Your Own Beats

At this point in your career as a soon to be triple-platinum, Grammy award winning, record label owning hip hop producer, you have some tough decisions to make. Should you buy a drum machine or get some software to make your own beats? I mean, you've already got a computer right? You're probably not reading this from a hip hop newsletter.

Here's the thing, equipment costs money. And while I think owning actual hands-on equipment is the way to go in terms of learning more faster, I also think that you should start making your own beats and learning the ropes fast as you can if you're serious. So let's break it down a little so you can see where I'm coming from.

Having your first bit of musical equipment is an awesome feeling. Most musicians can tell you the first piece they ever owned. I mowed lawns and saved money and bought a red fretless yamaha bass. I don't know why in the heck I thought I needed a fretless bass but it sounded silky smooth and playing was all I wanted to do. I started out learning with my hands, not a mouse. And everyone develops a bond with their equipment that allows them to personalize their music and creative style. That's why I think you should have real equipment. Twisting knobs and tapping buttons will get you in to the feeling aspect of the music, which is why we all want to make music anyway, right? We love the way great music makes us feel!

But software is so versatile. Even cheap software can do a lot. And you can experiment and tweak and filter and add more and change things instantly. But you're stuck at your computer. That's the down side. I could take my laptop outside and sit in my backyard and click out some cool beats right now. But it's much more fun to go play guitar outside. And it's much more fun to make my beats on the computer at my desk with the speakers cranked up. And I can have a song laid out in minutes and start mixing it just as fast. There's power in that flexibility.

Have You Given an Awesome Gift?

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Several stores have already started beating the "holiday gift giving" drum. Its beat is pleasant to those I-got-my-Christmas-shopping-done-in-August people, but for the other 99.9% of us, its tune is - well, annoying. How on earth are you supposed to know what to get for all those people on your list?

Have You Given an Awesome Gift?

1. First, don't ever purchase "random" gifts. Trust me, they don't feel real to the recipient and they will go in the "re-gift" pile as soon as you leave. (No one needs another game, toaster, or puzzle, unless they specifically request it.)

2. Second, avoid clothing at all costs, especially for people that you haven't seen in awhile because you don't know for sure if the item will fit. Robes and slippers are about the only exception to the rule. Husbands and significant others would be very wise to follow this rule no matter how much you like the Victoria's Secret store.

3. Third, for goodness sake, if a woman is on a diet/ trying to lose weight/ just bought an exercise machine, never, ever, ever, purchase her a gift of 10 pounds of chocolate! Come Easter, she will blame the fact she can't lose weight on you. Blame is the gift that keeps on giving (if you know what I mean).

4. Consider doing a gift exchange this year with your family and co-workers. This has multiple bonuses because you save money and the headache of having to purchase a lot of gifts, and best for the recipient, the gift they get will be something that they really want or need. You can truly focus on figuring out what a particular person is into and go all out. (Think of it this way, you can purchase an ipod instead of an itunes gift card).

5. Ask! Everyone has at least a general idea of what they want to get. Ask them to name off at least two things and then you can focus your attention on being the best Santa that you can.

The most important thing to remember this season is keeping the focus. There is no greater gift than the gift of time. For example, if you purchase a remote control item for you child it is only a toy to be cast aside. However, if you spend time teaching them to work the controls and fly it with them for hours on end, then you have given a present they will never forget. Here is another thought. If you give your wife/ husband/ significant other massage oil then treat them to several massages. This makes you the official best gift-giver ever. Simply attach a gift card on the item that says "This gift comes with" and then a way you can make the gift special. Your time is the most important thing that you can give this holiday.

Most Of Us Were Taught The Wrong Way To Make Money

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

There is a new way of earning a living that wasn't available to us 10 years ago, but today is building massive success stories and even millionaires.

Most Of Us Were Taught The Wrong Way To Make Money

When growing up, most of us were taught in school and/or by our parental figures that there is a pattern to life. It begins with elementary school, then high school, then university, then into a job making money for someone else (often while carrying the hefty burden of a student loan). After that there is retirement, although that has begun to change as more tired workers expecting to finally be able to enjoy life are finding out that is not necessarily an option for them.

Let's be fair, working for others is not a bad thing, it can be a great experience in your life. What is not natural (in my opinion) is how many millions of people are only one pay-check away from disaster and that our whole socially accepted system is based on making money for someone else - and that someone else can fire you at anytime. You earn just enough to pay your bills but not enough to travel and enjoy the world, or buy that big back yard jacuzzi to soak in at night or even to feel secure and happy about your future. Instead you may feel trapped with no end of the cycle in site.

Does this seem "natural" or secure to you?

Growing up with one immigrant parent I realized early on that society's "rules" are not really rules at all, they are simply one way that you "could" choose to live. Yet most people buy into these rules without even a second thought, while in fact you can live anywhere you pretty much want on this planet, choose your vocation and live to the beat of your own drum.

This society accepted cycle or "rule", also happens to be, by the way, largely based in fear; the fear of striking out on your own, fear of employers not having enough worker bees, fear of being different or unaccepted by society. Have you ever got the feeling that banks treat entrepreneurs or people self-employed as not really employed?

But I ask you, "When does something that is based in fear - ever turn out to be the best way to go in life?"

And who were the people who first came up with this hair-brained idea that this was the only "decent way" to make a living? My bet is the aristocrats, the government or wealthy factory owners...or simply people based in fear of the unknown. Anyway it doesn't matter - they are history and you are not. You are living in one of the most exciting and changing times the world has ever seen.

We live in an incredible time in the history of our planet where never before could we get so much education and have direct knowledge at our fingertips.

You want to learn how to make money, then find a millionaire online who is teaching it. You want to learn how to teach or work in another country - then go online and find that. One of my girlfriends woke up one morning and decided she wanted to quit her job and begin to study wines. She went online and found an ad to come work for the summer at a winery in Italy, no experience required. It turned out to be a life changing event in her life. She lived in a castle in Italy with one of the wealthiest and famous families from the US and began a whole new career.

With the power of the internet and new technology such as video on the internet and podcasting (audio or video) you can not only learn from experts around the world ...you can become one!

Learn how to make money and work for yourself by selling your ideas. You can teach others who want to learn from you! You can even have your own TV or radio show at zero cost and zero permission from anyone and gain instant celebrity status. Plus you can write a book online and sell it, create a learning program online and sell that around the world or become an article writer where thousands can read and download it at a push of a button and without any publisher - or again any cost!

People from all over the world who are interested in your topic will seek you out, and you simply sell them what they want.

Today you could earn an incredible living by earning money or creating a business, where you simply sell information that you already have, and becoming known as an Expert in your field by sharing that information and helping others.

The greatest thing about this is that you can literally re-invent yourself. Let's say you were an accountant by day for many years, but your secret passion was travel, and being an accountant you were a very savvy traveller. In fact you found not only destinations that were undiscovered by hordes of tourists and were dirt cheap for the American dollar, but you studied and found out how you could fly with free upgrades and at much lower costs than the average traveller. Well....that could be your business. If you have the expertise and experience, there is nothing stopping you from creating a travel membership site for others, or an ebook series or ezine series where you sell for tips for savvy travellers or even interviewing industry travel experts on your own radio show where you can give your audience even greater travel tips and hot spots.

To find out how you can or if you should consider yourself an "expert" please refer to my article "How Experts are Born".

Today the main point I'd like you to take away, is the realization that most of us were taught the wrong way to make money.

The truth is that 97 out of every 100 people will go their entire lives without learning the right way to make money. The good news is that virtually anyone can be taught how to make six figures annually.

The big secret wealthy people know is this: Making money has nothing to do with age, formal education, gender or geography.

The second concept you need to take into your psyche, for anything to change in your life, is to understand that MONEY is simply a REWARD or EXCHANGE for something else. That's it! Money could be stones or beads or paper (as it is today). It is not unreasonable to think you can acquire a lot of green or purple (or whatever color in your country) pieces of paper!

Money is not scary or powerful or elusive. It is just paper - it is simply an exchange or reward for something else (yes I repeated that but it is so important).

To help put this in perspective for you, let's look at the 3 main strategies for making money (or acquiring paper):

1. Trading Time for Money. That's when you pretend to work and they pretend to pay you. The big flaw with this method is that people work their entire lives until they're exhausted and barely have any time off to enjoy their money. You may feel stuck or unable to do what you want or get what you need, because the bills outweigh the bank account. When you have a job you are exchanging your time so you don't get paid unless you work specific hours- you become a slave to your job. And what you earn is always limited as you can't work more hours than there are in a day and working crazy hours makes your family life suffer and you end up exhausted, so where's the prize there?

2. Trading Money for Money. This method is used only by 3% of the population today. The Golden rule of investing is - only invest what you can afford to lose. Ok here's a question - If you don't have the money to start with - or any "extra" money how are you ever going to get into it?

3. Trading Value for Money. This is what I do, and what I mentor other people to do. You get paid for your value when you solve someone's problem or give them information, training or experience. Thousands of people just like you are learning how to make money by selling their information or expertise. They're capitalizing on their own imaginations, knowledge of life or work experiences, by selling information they already have and building a home-based business out of it often times with no employees. And the best part is - they are spending next to nothing to get started. All you really need is a computer and a phone, something most of us already have.

Your computer & your phone can become your own ATM machine - that's power and freedom over your life, but you'll also receive heartfelt thank-you's from people, and that's more rewarding and fulfilling than anything else.

Chances are you are throwing away literally thousands of dollars every month by not sharing your knowledge. We all have a built-in natural need to learn from each other in this world, that is why this "business" or way of earning money has become so incredibly successful. We constantly share information and experiences with our friends and our family to help them out - so why not bottle it and help even more people? Why not turn that into a business? Share your information with even more people, and make money in the process! It's a win/win. You feel great and so does your customer.

Do you enjoy working for yourself? Would you like to make a minimum of 0,000 a year? Can you work in an environment from home and set your own hours? Imagine being able to live life in a more "natural" way, the way I believe we are meant to, where you help others while you get to enjoy the good things in life, like creating your own raises and salaries whenever you want to, going to the park or Disneyland with your family on a moments notice and without carrying any financial burdens or debt load of a educational loans.

Wouldn't you love to make six figures a year from your couch or home office? Millions of people are using intellectual property marketing to make money for themselves. So can you.

To learn how you can create this type of business step by step simply visit http://www.mitprogram.com for more info or email me: info@stefaniehartman.com.

Classic Motorcycles - Kawasaki 750H2

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

The Kawasaki 750H2 was introduced at a time when environmental concerns generally were becoming more mainstream. Since Honda had stolen a march on the whole motorcycling world in 1968 by the introduction of the first recognised "super bike", the CXB750, just beating Kawasaki who had their own new 750 in the pipeline, Kawasaki had started to push the boundaries of motorcycle design.

Classic Motorcycles - Kawasaki 750H2

Creating a new class as they did, the 900cc class with the introduction in 1974 of the Z1, Kawasaki had comprehensively gained their revenge on Honda with a new machine that trounced the CB750 in every department.

However, the 750 class was far from dead, and continues to be competitive today. In 1973, Kawasaki released the 750H2. The styling was very similar to that of the Z1, but this time with three exhausts not four, given that this was a triple cylinder machine. Unlike the Z1, the H2 was a two stroke machine that smoked heavily and guzzled fuel at a rate of 20 miles per gallon! It was once described by the editor of Bike magazine, then Mark Williams as "the nastiest, meanest motorcycle ever to wrench the wrist muscles of the know-it-all biker."

What made it particularly interesting was the fact that both peak power and peak torque arrived within 300rpm of each other, peak torque arriving first. What this means is that when riding at low speed the bike sounds a bit burbling, and feels gutless. However, a small turn of the wrist and the bike takes off like lightening and all but pulls your arms off.

This is difficult enough, but you then had to consider the fact that this machine only had a single 295mm disc brake on the front and a 200mm drum on the rear, so hazards had to be anticipated earlier than usual.

Even Kawasaki's own press release said of the moderately detuned H2B that it had "only one purpose in life; to give you the most exciting and exhilarating performance. It's so quick, it demands the razor sharp reactions of an experienced rider." The H2 was put aside in 1975, but remains a formidable machine, even by today's standards.

How To Yodel-ai-eeee-ooo!

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Have you ever wondered how Jewel can yodel like she does? With such an adorable voice, her yodeling is so well balanced. When listening to her sing you just know she is performing live yodeling and not simply miming to the melody.

How To Yodel-ai-eeee-ooo!

So what are the secrets of yodeling?

Yodeling is a form of singing which involves an extended note swiftly and repetitively altering its pitch from the vocal chord usually coming from the chest area. This singing method originates from several cultures the world over.

African, Persian and Swiss performers each have their own version of yodeling. In Central Africa, the pygmy singers use a detailed polyphonic singing, which is another form of yodeling. In classical Persian music, the singers accompany yodeling with tahrir or an instrument which fluctuates the yodeling tones. For those who lived in the Swiss Alps, yodeling was how they communicated over the mountain peaks and it did not take long to become the traditional style music of the area.

As a rule, human voices have two individual vocal registers known as the head and chest voices, the lower pitch coming from the chest. The pitch is relatively higher when coming from the head.

Whether experienced or inexperienced singing the ranges between the head and the chest are difficult to attain. Because of the vocal training received, experienced singers control their voice and are able to overlap the ranges, changing from the high quality of the head to the low quality of the chest and this is how the sound of yodeling is produced by repeatedly going backwards and forwards over the head and chest chords.

Try saying this: "Yodlayeeeeooo" with the "Eeee" coming from the head voice and the rest from the chest voice whilst alternating the high and low pitches. There you are - you are yodeling!

Yodeling is very much a form of contemporary music. Singers such as the Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan and Nelly Furtado can all be heard yodeling and in musical productions some of the characters yodel for a short time in their scenes.

If you want to yodel and do it properly, remember practice makes perfect, following consultation with a vocal coach. With the right vocals anybody can learn the proper way to yodel and as long as you know where to draw the note from, either the head or the chest you are well on your way to becoming a good yodeler.

Hip Hop Dancing

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Hip hop dancing is an urban ethnic dance form that has gained popularity in recent days. It is more common than the break dance of modern days. Hip hop dancing marked its beginning as part of the hip hop culture in the early 1900's, when the youth in and around Bronx, New York started dancing on the streets.

Hip Hop Dancing

Hip hop dancing is an ideal way to express one's creativeness. It features self impressions and the dances come from the soul. The dancing represents body movements that go with the beat and rhythm of hip hop music. There is breaking, popping, locking, and free styling in hip hop dances. The jumps, breakages, and rotations in the movements are combined in such a way that the dance style becomes an informal and explosive one.

Hip hop dancing is considered a good exercise for those persons who perform these dances. It helps the dancers to improve flexibility, to develop body balance, and to coordinate the muscles. This dance allows the dancers to improve their own style and to remain in good body shape. It also leads the dancers to a state of spiritual wholeness.

Hip hop dancing includes many steps and movements that are not present in ballet and ballroom dancing. The jazz, ballet, and other traditional dance forms are technical and require more formal training. There is a term for each and every movement in jazz and ballets. But this is not the case with hip hop dancing and the dancers experience freedom while dancing. The only thing the dancers should have is to become familiar with the dancing technique.

Hip hop dancing can be learned by all those who are interested in dancing. There is no age limitation or restriction for learners and dancers. It is also not necessary that the instructor should be a professional dancer. However, this kind of dance is slightly difficult to learn because of the various body movements.

Vivaldi's Winter

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Songwriting is a balancing act between music and lyrics. Recently I was teaching one of my classes about Vivaldi's Winter from the Four Seasons. I was trying to articulate that the composer was able to paint a picture of Winter using only music. I then asked my students to think about why the song truly does paint a picture of winter.

Vivaldi's Winter

We talked about dissonance in the melody first. "Why would a song about Winter have intervals that create dissonance?" I said that it was because the cold of winter creates dissonance in us, as we try to brave the cold, bundle up and try to move from one warm area to the next. What about the steady four - four rhythms followed by violin flurries that last an unpredictable number of measures (actually most of them last 3 measures).

We decided that the unmeasured bursts would be the wind. The steady beats could be the sound of one of us trudging through the snow with each laborious footstep with violin flurries blowing the cold air down our throats making it hard to breathe. My favorite thought was the shivering violins in the song's most stable section. Really the most memorable part of the song. In songwriting that would be called prosody---musical sections that represent what is happening in the lyrics.

In my original band Freerider, we used a lot of prosody. We have a song called Ageless Veins, which is all about the Nashua River and some of its history. The introduction uses tapped harmonics on the guitar making a very dripping watery sound. Further in the song, the guitar solo has a whammy bar dive with delay and chorus on it which sounds like a dive to the bottom of a River. From there, the solo seems to flow very dramatically rising to climax. Like Vivaldi's Winter, "Ageless Veins" musically resembles the theme that drives the lyrics.

Attachment Parenting Origins! Revealed! The Origins of Attachment Parenting Part 1

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Attachment Parenting is a very Broad term. For simplicity's sake, I will begin with the FACTS and bare bones as to how Attachment Parenting started.

Attachment Parenting Origins! Revealed! The Origins of Attachment Parenting Part 1

The original concept of Attachment Parenting was formally introduced in 1958 by John Bowlby in a publication of two papers "the Nature of the Child's Tie to his Mother", in which the concepts of "attachment" were introduced. This was the Attachment Theory and not yet coined Attachment Parenting.

For details of Bowlbys Attachment Theory visit: Wikipedia.com Attachment theory

More information on the works of John Bowlby himself: Wikipedia.com and search "John Bowlby" (sorry not allowed many links).

John Bowlby devoted extensive research to the concept of attachment, describing it as a "lasting psychological connectedness between human beings". Bowlby discussed that early experiences in childhood have an important influence on development and behavior later in life. Early attachment styles are established in childhood through the infant/caregiver relationship.

Bowlby believed that there are four distinguishing characteristics of attachment:

1. Proximity Maintenance - The desire to be near the people we are attached to.
2. Safe Haven - Returning to the attachment figure for comfort and safety in the face of a fear or threat.
3. Secure Base - The attachment figure acts as a base of security from which the child can explore the surrounding environment.
4. Separation Distress - Anxiety that occurs in the absence of the attachment figure.

Alongside Bowlby was Mary Ainsworth who did her own Attachment Theory work and greatly contributed to Bowlby's work.

Around the same time Harry Harlow did research and scientific study on infant rhesus monkeys. Below is an excerpt that explains his work far better than I can:

The Science of Love

How did Harlow go about constructing his science of love? He separated infant monkeys from their mothers a few hours after birth, then arranged for the young animals to be "raised" by two kinds of surrogate monkey mother machines, both equipped to dispense milk. One mother was made out of bare wire mesh. The other was a wire mother covered with soft terry cloth. Harlow's first observation was that monkeys who had a choice of mothers spent far more time clinging to the terry cloth surrogates, even when their physical nourishment came from bottles mounted on the bare wire mothers. This suggested that infant love was no simple response to the satisfaction of physiological needs. Attachment was not primarily about hunger or thirst. It could not be reduced to nursing.

Then Harlow modified his experiment and made a second important observation. When he separated the infants into two groups and gave them no choice between the two types of mothers, all the monkeys drank equal amounts and grew physically at the same rate. But the similarities ended there. Monkeys who had soft, tactile contact with their terry cloth mothers behaved quite differently than monkeys whose mothers were made out of cold, hard wire. Harlow hypothesized that members of the first group benefited from a psychological resource-emotional attachment-unavailable to members of the second. By providing reassurance and security to infants, cuddling kept normal development on track.

What exactly did Harlow see that convinced him emotional attachment made a decisive developmental difference? When the experimental subjects were frightened by strange, loud objects, such as teddy bears beating drums, monkeys raised by terry cloth surrogates made bodily contact with their mothers, rubbed against them, and eventually calmed down. Harlow theorized that they used their mothers as a "psychological base of operations," allowing them to remain playful and inquisitive after the initial fright had subsided. In contrast, monkeys raised by wire mesh surrogates did not retreat to their mothers when scared. Instead, they threw themselves on the floor, clutched themselves, rocked back and forth, and screamed in terror. These activities closely resembled the behaviors of autistic and deprived children frequently observed in institutions as well as the pathological behavior of adults confined to mental institutions, Harlow noted. The awesome power of attachment and loss over mental health and illness could hardly have been performed more dramatically.

Though Harry didn't coin any terms, he contributed significantly to the Attachment Theorem.

This is Part 1 of The Origins of Attachment Parenting REVEALED!

Stay tuned for Part Two and discover who really started Attachment Parenting...

Warmly,

Ashley Ryan

Make Your Own Beats - What Are You Waiting For?

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Have you ever dreamed of programming drums like Timbaland or Swizz Beats? Then make your own beats! Are you a rapper or emcee that really wants to put out a demo or album but just can get your hands on the right music? Then make your own beats! Are you in a group where one person handles most of the production of beats and you have to wait on him or her to give you beats or get into the studio to record? Make your own beats!

Make Your Own Beats - What Are You Waiting For?

Are you a Hiphoppa in need of some extra cash? Make your own beats! Do you want to leave a lasting mark on the music industry and have a long career? That's right - you need to make your own beats! Am I serious about you making your own beats? Yes, yes, and yes! I'm sure many people can relate to my story. I've been in the music business since 1988. I've been in several groups where someone else handled the beat making duties and most of the time I never had a problem with it. I always felt like I could make my own beats but I never really pursued it because I was so focused on becoming the best emcee (for those that are Hiphop dialect challenged, an emcee is also called a rapper - but not all rappers are emcees. That a topic for another article).

I'm a perfectionist so in my mind, I became one of the best emcees. I mean I've even performed at the Apollo in Harlem with one group I was in called The Insane Cirkle so I thought I was "the man". Everything was fine for a while but we always had to go back to a certain producer with our ideas and he would charge us by the hour for studio time to put the ideas together and record songs & demos. I kept encouraging the members of the group to get our own equipment and no one moved a muscle. One day, one of co-workers at my slightly above minimum wage job who had some connections with Dallas Austin and some other people offered to let me use a Boss 660 drum machine that he had laying around the house. I accepted and I began to make killer beats. The only drawback was that I could not make any melodies with it so I still end up going back to the same producer to help me finish the rest of the track and I was still paying him for studio time...and giving him production credits. But I did make some money with the 660. I knew I could not keep the Boss 660 forever so I bought my first piece of equipment: A Roland PMA - Personal Music Assistant.

At the time it was cutting edge technology because I could produce on the go.

I was a public transportation user back then and I could make my own beats while I was on the train. It was MIDI capable so I could sync it up with other MIDI instruments in the studio and the sounds that it produced were not bad. I made some money with it too. Later after The Insane Cirkle broke up, I found myself in another group called Prophetix with my homeboy Eddie Meeks. Prophetix accomplished many great things and once again I shrugged off the production duties to work on my lyrics because our deejay, Jon Doe, was our producer who made really hot beats. With me being from down south, I wanted more bass kicks in the music I rhymed over but no one was feeling me on that concept. Most of the hit rap songs that you listen to have 808 kick drum sounds in them and so do the classics. As with the last group I got tired of waiting for beats and waiting to record in the studio so one day I went out and bought Reasons 3.0 and an EMU X-Board 25 and the rest is history. The members of Prophetix disbanded for one reason or another and I'm REALLY glad I got my own equipment.

There is an old saying that goes, "God blesses the child that's got his own". Well, I no longer have to wait on others to make music for me or wait to go to the studio just to record scratch vocals. Sure, I'll rhyme over another producers beats but I don't have to wait on anybody and my studio time is not limited by anybody else. If I have a good idea, I don't have to wait a week or two to get it recorded. I can do it all from the comfort of my home studio when ever I want to do it. The point I'm trying to say is WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? There are endless optionS for making your own beats. I not a fool though. I know everyone can't afford an MPC 3000 or software like Reasons. As much as I love what the MPC does, it was just simply out of my budget. One great option for new producers to get is to get Music Producer Pro. It comes with software you can download off the Internet and it is full of tutorials that can help you get started today. It is currently selling at .95 at the time of this writing but it's easily worth 0 to 0. If you don't get started making your own beats now when will you get started?

What is an Arpeggio?

,
DRUM MACHINE BEATS :

Perhaps you have heard the word arpeggio being tossed around by other musicians, but have absolutely no clue what they were talking about. Simply defined, an arpeggio refers to playing the notes within a chord in rapid succession. On the guitar, this can be done by either using a pick or your fingers.

What is an Arpeggio?

Incorporating arpeggios into your guitar playing can be a very simple matter, or a very complicated one, depending on your approach to the subject. Because I am a guitar teacher, I generally try to find ways to introduce my students to new techniques that are easy to understand and relatively easy to do. So let's see if I can help you learn how to play an arpeggio today.

If you want to use a fingerpicking style to play an arpeggio, then you need to know how the right hand fingers are identified. There are four letters, p-i-m-a, which stand for the Spanish words: pulgar, indicio, medio, and anular. These four letters represent each finger as follows:

p = thumb

i = index finger

m = middle finger

a = ring finger

When you are trying an arpeggio for the first time, then I suggest you start with a chord, or chord progression, that you can play fairly well. For our purpose today, we will start with the chord A major and then progress to a chord progression in the key of A.

While holding an A major chord, play each string that is identified in the pattern below with the corresponding fingers of your right hand. Practice it several times until your fingers get accustomed to the movement. Be careful to maintain a relaxed "cupped" hand in order to avoid tension and fatigue.

1 ---------------a-----------

2 ----------m------m-------

3 -------i---------------i----

4 ---------------------------

5 ----p----------------------

6 ---------------------------

Notice that your thumb (p) is playing an open A on the bass string which is also the name of the chord.

The pattern uses eighth notes in 3/4 time and is counted:

p i m a m i

1 & 2 & 3 &

One complete sequence of the pattern is equal to one measure of music.

Now try playing the same pattern using a D major chord and then an E major chord. Move your thumb to play the open bass string which identifies the name of the chord you are on. The other fingers (i-m-a) will play the same strings on all three chords.

Once you are comfortable playing an arpeggio with the chords: A major, D major, and E major, try playing the same chord progression as it is used in the Christmas song Silent Night. Here is the link:

Silent Night

Have fun!
